City Hawker Food Hunt is jointly organised by City Energy and Shin Min Daily News and supported by the National Environment Agency (NEA), Health Promotion Board (HPB) and Singapore Tourism Board (STB). It is so far the most prestigious award conferred on hawkers from an island-wide selection. It aims to highlight Singapore all-time favourite hawker foods as well as “My Favourite Hawker Centre”, “Most ‘Healthier Choice’ Hawker Centre” and the “Most Authentic Hawker Stall”.
City Hawker Food Hunt was first established in 2008 and it was a 5-month long search for the best stalls for the 4 food categories: Nasi Lemak, Char Kway Teow, Laksa and Coffee and Toast. The 1st run wrapped up with 50 hawker stalls walking away with coverage on Shin Min Daily’s monthly F&B supplement and the iconic Merlion logo became the quintessential stamp of approval for stalls serving the best hawker food in Singapore. Now, City Hawker Food Hunt has extended to become a 7-month long event that hawkers and the public look forward to every year.
Year 2011 marked the unveiling of the “I Love Hawker Food” campaign which encouraged both locals and foreigners to show their appreciation to hawkers, local hawker centre food and culture. In 2012, the committee specially commissioned the City Hawker Food Guide, a consolidation of the winning hawker stalls for 16 all-time favourite hawker dishes in 1 handy book.
